RF Designer - Components (Microstrip Elements)

All components found in the microstrip catalog require a substrate to be defined in RF Designers Substrate Manager. This can be found under Settings->Substrates on the Action Bar menu. If a substrate for a component is not selected when simulating the circuit, RF Designer will choose the first substrate defined in the Substrate Manager for the simulation. If no substrate has been defined, the simulation will stop and an error dialog will appear.

Model for a pair of symmetric edge coupled microstrip transmission lines. Width W defines the trace width for both of the coupled microstrip lines whose length is define by L. The coupled lines are seperated by a gap distance of S. This model requires a substrate to be defined in the Substrate Manager which can be found under Setting->Substrates.
This model is accurate for
0.1 ≤ W/H ≤ 10
0.1 ≤ S/H ≤ 10
1 ≤ εr ≤ 18
where H is the height of the substrate being used.

Model for a three way right angle microstrip junction. Nodes 1 and 2 are directly through and node 3 is perpendicular to nodes 1 and 2. All three ports should be connected to a microstrip element (e.g., MLIN) which has a width matching the port it is connected to. Model for a four way microstrip cross junction. Nodes 1 and 3 are nodes 2 and 4 are through and perpendicular to nodes 1 and 3. All four ports should be connected to a microstrip element (e.g., MLIN) which has a width matching the port it is connected to. Model for an optimal right angle mitered microstrip bend. The width of the microstrip is defined by W and is the same for both nodes. The length of the miter is determined by the formula: √2(1.04 + 1.3 * exp(-1.35 * W / H)) where H is the height of the microstrip substrate. This model requires a substrate to be defined in the substrate manager found under Settings->Substrates.
This model is accurate to within 4% under the following conditions:
W/H ≥ 0.25 (where H is the microstrip substrate height)
εr ≤ 25

Model for a microstrip radiused bend. Width (W) defines the microstrip trace width at both nodes. Angle (ANG) is the angle through which the bend sweeps and the radius (R) is defined to the centerline of the trace. The angle is limited to a maximum of 180° (π radians). The bend is modeled as a straight MLIN whose length is calculated as ANG / 360 * 2π * R. This model requires a substrate to be defined in the substrate manager found under Settings->Substrates.

This model is accurate to within 7% under the following conditions:
0.1 ≤ S/W ≤ 1
2.5 ≤ εr ≤ 10
